pKADS was officially launched by BIS, UNFPA and the DCMNR on December 10, 2003 at the World Summit of the Information Society in Geneva, Switzerland. pKADS (portable knowledge asset development system) is an open source desktop application, written in Java, that can be used to create “Knowledge Assets,” which:
- contain distilled, experiential knowledge on a particular subject, issue or process,
- present information in a question-and-answer format, organized into categories,
- help readers find related resources, such as examples, experts and documents for further reading,
- enable a community of “asset network members” to work together in developing and maintaining the asset.
Combined with appropriate workflows and organizational commitment, pKADS can help organizations implement effective knowledge sharing practices. The UCC team and the DCMNR went on to develop eGOV-KP, an open source Java enterprise application.
